Exotic River Cruises
River Cruising has expanded to include some of the more exotic rivers in the world. Choosing your favorite destination may lead you to discover there’s a river waiting to be explored as well.
RIVER CRUISING IN ASIA
The longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world, the Yangtze River stretches through China’s most enchanting historic, cultural and culinary treasures. Sail through the impressive Three Gorges with its dreamlike vertical cliffs and view the immense dam, China’s largest construction project since the Great Wall. A journey down the Yangtze River—a lifeline in ancient and modern times—is full of intrigue, mystery and astonishing beauty.
From its source high up in the Tibetan Plateau the powerful Mekong River courses for over 3,000 miles through China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, providing a lifeline for millions of people. In Vietnam, cruise the massive Mekong Delta that covers an area of some 15,000 square miles. This picturesque area is dotted by rice paddies, fish farms, fruit orchards, and more. In Cambodia, explore French-influenced Phnom Penh, the spectacular Silver Pagoda, and learn about the sobering Khmer Rouge regime. North of the city you cruise on the Tonle River, which connects the main Mekong with Tonle Sap or “Great Lake.” This is the most picturesque part of your journey as the river narrows and passes through villages and woodlands.
RIVER CRUISING IN EGYPT
Measuring 4,160 miles, the Nile is the longest river in the world, flowing north from Lake Victoria through Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt. As you journey along the lifeline of Egyptian civilization, experience incredible sights that include ancient temples, tombs, and local villages. Passing rainforests, mountains, savannas, swamps, and desert landscapes, it culminates in the fertile Nile Delta and drains into the Mediterranean Sea. Lake Nasser is a vast reservoir created in the 1960s when the High Dam was built to harness the waters of the Nile. As the waters rose, they threatened to engulf many sites of historical significance. Several ancient Egyptian and Nubian archaeological sites were dismantled and moved to higher ground, the most important being Abu Simbel. As you sail the tranquil waters, it is hard to imagine how much still lies submerged. The lake is remote and sparsely populated by fishermen and Bedouin camel and sheep herdsmen.
