St. Maarten is the only Caribbean island that belongs to two different countries. The island is divided between the French and the Dutch and both sides have a distinctly different culture.
The French side is a bit larger in area and its capital is Marigot. It boasts beautiful beaches in Orient Bay and Bay Rouge, culinary excellence in Grand Case, the highest point on the island at Pic Paradis and shopping delights in Marigot.
The Dutch side of St. Maarten hosts the airport and the cruise port, both in its capital of Phillipsburg. There are more great beaches on this side of the island and fine shopping and restaurants in Phillipsburg, but the Dutch side is best known for its nightlife and casinos.
St. Maarten is a casual island with beautiful beaches and calm blue water and the opportunity for day trips to the nearby islands of Anguilla, St. Barts and Saba. There are a few all-inclusive resorts on the island, but many more hotels or bed & breakfast properties. This is a great island for people who enjoy strolling through towns and visiting different restaurants each night, while relaxing on beautiful beaches during the day.
