IRELAND – Kilkenny & Dublin

This morning we were off to Dublin! On the way we made stops at Cahir and Kilkenny, both with castles right in town.
First though, we were privileged with the opportunity to visit a memorial just outside of Kinsale dedicated to the NY Firemen killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Kathleen Murphy, an Irishwoman raised in Kinsale who worked 40 years in a NY hospital, set aside a portion of her land for this memorial. She hung American flags and …

IRELAND – Blarney, Cork & Kinsale

Our last night in Killarney was bitter sweet. We had a lovely group dinner at the Earls Court House with a choice of lamb or salmon….not a bad choice, I think. We continued celebrating our “group birthday” with cake and Irish or Baileys coffee and then some of us headed out to find the “mighty craic” in Killarney.
Several pubs did have live music, but being the middle of the week and in October, it was quieter than what we …

IRELAND – The Dingle Peninsula

What an amazing day! Today after breakfast we hopped on our coaches and headed off to tour the Dingle Peninsula. Talk about pure Irish magic!!!
This peninsula, known locally as “An Daingean”, is the farthest western point of Europe, from a land mass point. Iceland boasts the meeting of the tectonic plates of Europe and North America, but Iceland is not considered part of Europe.
Our first stop was a very popular summer spot for Irish families and visitors alike …

IRELAND – Cong & The Cliffs of Moher

Today we had a little of Ireland’s beautiful liquid sunshine, but only first thing in the morning!
After enjoying a full Irish breakfast at the House Hotel, we were off to visit the Connemara area of County Mayo, in particular  Ashford Castle and the town of Cong which served as the town and castle setting of the John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara movie “The Quiet Man”. The landscape of this area is what you might think of as typical Ireland. Rolling …

IRELAND – Dublin to Galway

We’re traveling in Ireland with a group of 48 from Ulster County and so far we’re having a blast! Our flight was smooth and short and Customs in Ireland was a breeze.
We were met at the airport by our tour guides from Destinations Ireland & Beyond and transferred quickly to our comfortable coaches. Our drivers and guides are friendly, happy and knowledgeable and we’re asking lots of questions.
First we visited Dublin’s version of “Beverly Hills”, where the rich …

Collioure, France

My travels to the Languedoc-Rousillon area of France were an amazing and enlightening experience that I’d like to share. This is the southwestern Mediterranean coastline of France, west of the Cote d’Azur or French Riviera and Provence, and east of the Pyrenees mountains.

Train Travel In France

I think whenever you travel, you should experience something new. Sometimes it’s a new destination, sometimes a different hotel property in the same destination and sometimes it’s the route you take to get there.

I decided on this trip to France that I would experience the TGV. What is the TGV? It stands for “Trains a Grand Vitesse” or high-speed trains, that run through France. Other countries in Europe have similar rail systems under different names …

River Cruise Wrap Up

I just want to reflect on this whole week’s experience. I have to thank Avalon Waterways for providing our home base on the BEAUTIFUL Avalon Creativity. This vacation style and form of cruising is quite a gift. The history that we found in each town and on each excursion was amazing, and the comfort, level of service and quality of food that we received onboard was comparable to any 4 or 5 star hotel property. No, there’s no gambling …

Les Andelys

This morning, I was awakened by an early phone call, which was not appreciated after a very late night…early morning. I stayed up last night to watch our boat pull out of Rouen, and that was around one in the morning. You can imagine that 7:00am came much too early. HOWEVER, upon opening the curtains a crack and seeing that the sun was rising, and we were still sailing, I opted to open not only the curtains, but the sliding …
